The ship was filled with immigrants from the East, exiled Spanish Republicans, Jews, stateless persons and decadent artists. Among them were Claude Lvi-Strauss, the painter Wifredo Lam, the writers Anna Seghers and Andr Breton, and the Russian revolutionary Victor Serge.
